 Day 1: Rafina – Mykonos

Day 2: Mykonos – Delos – Mykonos

Day 3: Mykonos – Rafina

Overview

Mykonos is worldwide the most famous Greek island. The name comes from the hero Mykonos, son of Enias and Rhyo. In classical times the Mykonians, which belonged to the Delian League , paid the Athenians alliance tax of one Talanto. During the revolution of Orlov, Mykonos was captured by the Russians who occupied it during the period 1770-1774. During the years of the Greek Rebelian Revolution the inhabitants heroically spearheaded with their vessels, which were joined with those of the rest of the fleet under admiral Tompazis and repeatedly resisted the Turks. Tourism developed rapidly after 1960.

The wild nightlife and the stunning beaches make it particularly popular among Greeks and foreigners. Rugged cliffs, small farmhouses, luxury villas and many churches in every corner of the island compose a unique destination, perfect for any season.

The name of Delos is directly related with mythology. Before being Delos (EN: visible) it had been a rock called Ortygia driffting here and there in the sea. So the place was invisible (GR: Adilos). When Zeus fell in love with Leto and she became pregnant, he faced the wrath of Hera who prevented Leto to give birth to her children. Neptune in order to help his brother, Zeus, turned Adilos (invisible) into Delos (visible), supporting it in with four pillars and there were born Apollo and Artemis. It is therefore a sacred place. Delos was the seat of Deleon alliance in the 5th century BC and important economic center of the ancient world.

In 69 BC it was destroyed by King Mithridates of Pontus and inhabited again in the early Christian times. From the 6th century there is no permanent population on the island. Maintained today are the ruins of the ancient city of Delos, the largest open air archaeological site in Europe, and the Museum of Delos, one of the few modern buildings on the island.
